Shoulder surfing is the oldest trick in the book and it still works. A laptop open on a train, in a coffee shop or on a plane tray shows its whole screen to everyone seated behind and beside you. A privacy filter fixes one narrow problem: it narrows the angle from which the screen is readable. It does not stop malware, a camera aimed over your shoulder from directly behind, or a coworker who simply walks up and looks. Within that limit it is one of the cheapest defenses you can buy.

Our take

Pick by how the filter attaches, and size it to your exact model. For modern 14 and 16 inch laptops, a magnetic Kensington MagPro is the easiest to put on and take off. MacBook Air 13.6 inch owners can use the Kensington MP136, which clips to the built-in magnets. If you want a permanent filter, a 3M model is the standard choice. Always check width and height, not just the diagonal.

How a privacy filter works

The film is built from microscopic louvers, like a tiny set of blinds. Light from straight ahead passes through. Light from the sides is blocked, so the screen looks black to anyone off to the side. 3M calls its version Nanolouver, and says the Bright Screen model passes up to 85 percent of light while going dark outside a 60 degree viewing angle. Kensington’s MagPro range specifies a narrower plus or minus 30 degrees.

The trade-off is real. A narrower angle means better privacy and a dimmer image, and you will probably raise the brightness a notch. You also lose the ability to show someone your screen without taking the filter off, which is why a removable design matters for people who share their screen in meetings.

Sizing: the mistake that sends filters back

Laptop screens with the same diagonal can have different shapes. A 14 inch 16:9 panel and a 14 inch 16:10 panel are not the same width and height. Kensington’s listings spell this out and tell buyers to check dimensions, not only the diagonal. Look up your model’s screen size and aspect ratio before ordering, or measure the visible area with a ruler. A filter that is a few millimetres too big will not sit flat, and one that is too small leaves a bright strip at the edge.

MacBook owners have a notch and a webcam to account for. Some filters are cut for the notch, and Apple models differ by year, so match the year and chip generation printed in the listing.

Who should buy what

A traveling consultant who opens a laptop on planes every week wants the magnetic type, because the filter goes in a sleeve and comes out in ten seconds. A person who works in a shared office with clients walking past a desk might prefer a fixed adhesive filter that never gets left at home. If you often share your screen on video calls, a filter does not affect what others see on the call, since it only changes the physical viewing angle.

For anyone handling regulated data such as medical or financial records, a filter is one control among several. It will not satisfy a compliance requirement by itself, so check your employer’s policy.

Other low-cost habits that cover what a filter misses

A filter handles the side view. It does nothing about a camera pointed at your keyboard, a person standing directly behind you, or a malicious program already on the machine. Pair it with a screen lock that triggers after a short idle time, a seat with a wall behind it, and a covered webcam. We cover that last step in our post on counter-surveillance basics.

When you work in someone else’s space, like an Airbnb or a hotel room, cameras are a separate concern. See what hosts can and cannot record and our hidden camera guide for how to check a room you do not control.

Fitting and cleaning

Clean the screen with a microfiber cloth before you fit any filter, including a magnetic one, since a speck of dust under a film will show up as a bright dot. Do not use a spray cleaner on the louver film itself. Store a magnetic filter flat in a folder or sleeve so the film does not scratch against keys. If you close the lid with the filter on, check that the filter is thin enough for your hinge to close fully, and that sleep mode still works. Kensington lists sleep working with the lid closed for its MagPro models, which is the sort of detail worth looking for on any alternative.

Check before you commit

Before ordering, write down three things: the screen’s diagonal, its aspect ratio (16:9 or 16:10), and the exact model year if it is a MacBook. Put them next to the listing and compare line by line. A filter that matches two out of three is the one that comes back in a box.

It also helps to test the result in the place you work. Set the laptop where you usually sit, then ask a friend to stand at the angle of the next seat and tell you what they can read. If the text is still legible at that angle, the filter is not doing its job or the screen brightness is too high.

Frequently asked questions

Does a privacy screen make the display look worse?

Slightly dimmer, yes. The louvers block side light by design, so most people raise the brightness a little. Glossy and matte sides change glare and sharpness a bit.

Can I use a filter with a touchscreen laptop?

Some films reduce touch response or are not meant for touchscreens. Read the listing for your model before buying, since this varies by product.

Will it stop someone behind me from reading my screen?

No. A filter works against side angles. Someone standing directly behind you sees the screen, so seat position still matters.

Is a magnetic filter safe for the laptop?

Kensington says its MP136 attaches to the magnets already built into the MacBook Air 13.6 inch. For other laptops, the MagPro uses its own strip. Check that your exact model is listed before you buy.
