A dedicated detector finds more hidden cameras than a phone app, but neither finds all of them, and the reason is physics rather than price. A hardware detector sweeps for radio transmissions and bounces infrared light off camera lenses. A phone app can do neither properly: it borrows a camera and a magnetometer that were designed for other jobs. If you only ever do one sweep in your life, do it with a $40 detector and your own eyes, in that order.

Verdict

Phone apps are worth the ten seconds they cost, and worth nothing more than that. The lens-glint trick they advertise works, but you can do it yourself with the flashlight you already have. Everything else in those apps is theater.

Search “hidden camera detector app” and you’ll find dozens of free downloads promising to scan a room. Most of them do one of three things: list devices on the Wi-Fi network, read the phone’s magnetometer, or turn on the flashlight and ask you to look for reflections. Two of those three are close to useless. The third is real, and it doesn’t need an app at all.

What a phone can genuinely detect

Camera lenses retroreflect. Shine a bright light straight at one and a small, sharp point of light comes straight back at you, brighter than any surrounding surface. That’s the basis of every lens-finder on the market, from a $15 keychain to a professional unit, and your phone flashlight does emit light.

What your phone lacks is the geometry. Purpose-built detectors put a ring of red LEDs immediately around a viewing hole, so your eye sits on the same axis as the light. That co-axial arrangement is what makes the glint pop. A phone flashlight sits a centimeter or two away from the phone camera and further still from your eye, so you catch the reflection only at lucky angles.

The magnetometer approach is worse. A phone’s compass sensor detects magnetic fields, and some cameras contain magnets, and so does the hinge of a cupboard door, a speaker, a screw, and the steel frame inside most walls. What a hardware detector adds

Two things, and they matter unevenly.

The first is the co-axial lens finder described above, which works and is the reason to own one. The second is an RF sweep: a broadband receiver that lights up when it sits near a live transmitter. That catches a Wi-Fi camera actively streaming, and it catches a lot of other things too, including the router, your own phone, a smart bulb, and a neighbour’s baby monitor through a drywall wall.

RF detection has one hard limit that no amount of money fixes. A camera recording to an SD card transmits nothing at all. It is, to a radio receiver, a lump of plastic. The network scan trap

Apps that list every device on the local network are genuinely informative in your own home, where you control the router and can recognize the strangers. In a hotel or a short-term rental they tell you almost nothing, because a camera installed by the property owner has every reason to sit on a separate network you were never given access to, or on a cellular modem, or on nothing at all.

How to sweep a room properly in ten minutes

Kill the lights. Take the detector, hold the lens finder to your eye, and walk the room slowly at the height of a bed or a sofa, scanning the surfaces that face it. You’re looking for a bright pinpoint that stays sharp as you move your head slightly, because a genuine lens returns light on axis while a bit of chrome trim scatters it.

Then do the physical pass, which finds more devices than the electronics do. Smoke detectors above a bed rather than in a hallway. Alarm clocks aimed at the room instead of at the pillow. USB chargers plugged in where nothing needs charging. Air purifiers, mirrors that sit flush in the wall, a picture frame with a pinhole in the mount. If something looks wrong and unplugging it is an option, unplug it. Cameras that lose power stop being cameras.

Frequently asked questions

Do free hidden camera detector apps work?

The lens-reflection feature works about as well as a flashlight, which is to say sometimes. The magnetometer feature does not work and produces constant false alarms from ordinary metal. The network scanner works only on a network you can join. None of them replace a physical search of the room, which finds more devices than any of the three.

Can a detector find a camera that isn’t connected to Wi-Fi?

Only through the lens finder, not through RF. A camera writing to an SD card emits no radio signal, so there is nothing for a radio receiver to hear. This is the single biggest gap in cheap detectors and the reason a visual sweep still matters. Point the lens finder at every surface that faces the bed and take your time.

Why does my detector beep near everything?

Because a modern home is full of transmitters. Routers, phones, smart bulbs, thermostats and a neighbour’s kit through the wall all register on a broadband RF sweep. Turn the sensitivity down until the detector goes quiet standing in the middle of the room, then raise it slowly while walking the walls. Absolute readings mean nothing; changes as you move mean something.

Is it legal to sweep a hotel room for cameras?

Sweeping a room you are lawfully occupying is legal in the United States. Owning an RF detector is legal. What is not legal is jamming a signal once you find one, which is a federal offense regardless of what the device was doing. If you find a camera in a rental, photograph it in place, leave it alone, and call the police.

One habit beats every gadget on this page: check where the bed is pointing, then look at everything the bed points at. Cameras get installed where the view is, and there are usually only three or four surfaces in a room that qualify.
